Overview

Responsible for supporting the planning, design, and delivery of civil engineering projects or programs in the area of transportation & roadway drainage. This role works under the direction of the Project Manager to execute small to moderately complex projects, ensuring compliance with technical standards, applicable codes, and client requirements. This position, acting as an assistant to the PM, works independently on assigned tasks and may lead or mentor junior engineers and technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares a range of engineering documents, including design plans, reports, technical proposals, calculations, and specifications.
  • Performs engineering design tasks for which may include:
    • Cost estimating and budget development
    • Contract and procurement support
    • Project planning and scheduling
    • Preliminary engineering and schematic design
    • Development of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E)
    • Compliance reviews and permitting coordination
    • Construction phasing and sequencing planning
  • Participates in the design of complex or unique project components, and performs QA/QC checks of design work.
  • Reviews construction documents and estimates; may develop construction schedules or track construction submittals.

Project Planning and Execution

  • Supports the Project Manager in planning and delivering projects to scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Monitors project milestones and deliverables; tracks tasks and timelines using project management tools.
  • Assists with resource planning, procurement coordination, and contract management.
  • Supports budget tracking and cost control efforts, identifying variances and potential issues.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate project documentation and status reports.
  • Supports development and implementation of quality control processes.
  • Contributes to project risk assessments and mitigation planning.
  • Participates in safety planning and field reviews as needed.

Team and Client Collaboration

  • Communicates regularly with project teams to coordinate work across disciplines and ensure alignment on goals.
  • Serves as a technical liaison between engineering team members and internal or external stakeholders.
  • May assist with coordination of subconsultants and ensure deliverables meet quality standards.
  • Supports internal client engagement efforts, including progress updates, status meetings, and technical presentations.
  • May provide input during proposal development or support business development tasks, including resumes and project write-ups.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Provides day-to-day guidance and oversight to junior staff, including Engineers-in-Training (EITs), designers, or interns.
  • Contributes to a positive team culture by participating in training, mentoring, and peer reviews.
  • May assist in onboarding new team members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, or related engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas or ability to obtain or transfer within 6 months of hire date.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience.
  • Valid TX driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Microstation/OpenRoads Designer
  • AutoCAD/Civil 3D a plus
